Insuring an electric car in Singapore: battery, charger and software explained

By Charles Ong · October 2026

An electric car is insured much like any other car, but a few things are different: the battery, the charger at home, and the software that helps you drive. This guide explains how Allianz Electric Motor Protect deals with each, based on its policy wording. Most of the EV benefits below are endorsements, which apply when they are shown in your policy schedule. Allianz's factsheet lists them as part of the comprehensive plan.

The battery is covered like the rest of your car

The policy treats the battery, the high and low voltage cables, the electric motor and the electronic control units as part of the car. On a comprehensive plan they are covered like any other part against accidental collision, fire, theft, flood and other natural events, riot and malicious damage. What the policy does not cover is gradual wear, depreciation, or a breakdown that was not caused by an accident. Loss of battery capacity over time is not covered by the policy, so keep your manufacturer's warranty and service records.

Your charger at home

On a comprehensive plan, Allianz pays to repair or replace your home wall charger if it is damaged by an external cause, up to $5,000, for one claim per policy year. A fault inside the charger itself is not covered. If a fire caused by your charger damages your home contents, Allianz pays up to $25,000. If your charger injures someone or damages another person's property while charging your car, liability cover of up to $50,000 applies. None of these claims affect your No Claim Discount.

Charging away from home

Your portable charging cable is covered up to $300 if it is lost or damaged in an accident, fire or theft involving forced entry. If you or your driver are injured, or your car is damaged, through using a public charging station, Allianz reimburses repair and medical costs up to $50,000.

Driver assistance and software

Damage that happens while you are using driver assistance features, including functions such as remote parking, is covered. The condition is important: you must follow the manufacturer's instructions and install all software and safety updates. If you do not, Allianz may cancel the policy and not pay any claim. When using remote parking or a summon function, you or your driver must have a clear view of the car. Loss or damage caused by hackers gaining unauthorised access to your car's systems is also covered, although a breakdown caused by malware is excluded.

A new car if yours is written off early

If your car is a total loss within 24 months of its first registration, Allianz will replace it with a new car of the same make and model, or pay the cash equivalent. This does not apply to losses from flood or theft, and a new COE is not guaranteed.

Repairs and where you are covered

Repairs must be done at an Allianz authorised workshop, unless you pay extra for the option to use a workshop of your choice. Accident repairs at an authorised workshop carry a lifetime guarantee on the workmanship, for as long as you stay insured with Allianz without a break. Cover applies in Singapore, West Malaysia and Thailand within 80 km of the Malaysian border.

After an accident
  1. 1Photograph all vehicles, number plates and the scene before moving the cars.
  2. 2Exchange names, contact details, insurers and vehicle numbers.
  3. 3Call 999 or 995 if anyone is hurt.
  4. 4Report at an Allianz authorised workshop within 24 hours or by the next working day, with any in-car camera footage.
Reporting late reduces your No Claim Discount by 10%, even if you do not claim.

What to watch out for

  • Use a registered charger. Charger cover only applies if your home charger complies with the Electric Vehicles Charging Act 2022 and is registered with the authorities.
  • Keep your car's software up to date. Skipping manufacturer updates can put a driver assistance claim at risk.
  • Police report within 24 hours. Claims for your home charger and portable cable need a police report lodged within 24 hours of the incident.
  • Report every accident. Report it at an Allianz authorised workshop within 24 hours or by the next working day, even if you are not claiming. If you do not, Allianz reduces your No Claim Discount by 10%.
  • Performance EVs are treated differently. For cars Allianz classes as high-performance vehicles, only named drivers are covered, and there is no new car replacement or courtesy car. Valet parking cover is added instead. Ask before you buy.
